May 6 - Coherent Corp COHR.N, COHR.N forecast fourth-quarter revenue above market estimates on Wednesday, banking on strong demand for its AI data center components to drive growth.
However, shares fell 8% in extended trading after rising nearly 87% this year, as the forecast did little to reassure investors who remain cautious about demand translating into firm, near-term orders.
Coherent saw "exceptionally strong demand across (the) datacenter and communications businesses," CEO Jim Anderson said in a statement.
The company makes optical transceivers, which are critical components that help manage the torrent of data traffic inside AI data centers, among other products.
Coherent forecast fourth-quarter revenue between $1.91 billion and $2.05 billion, compared to analysts' estimates of $1.91 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
It expects quarterly adjusted earnings per share of $1.52 to $1.72, compared to an estimate of $1.54.
For the third quarter, ended March 31, Coherent reported $1.81 billion in revenue, beating expectations for $1.78 billion.
Quarterly adjusted profit came in at $1.41, compared to an estimate of $1.40.
In March, Nvidia NVDA.O said it would invest $2 billion in Coherent to support research and development, future capacity and operations, as the optical components maker builds out its U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities.
