Dow Gains Over 200 Points; Signet Jewelers Shares Plunge

U.S. stocks traded higher toward the end of trading, with the Dow Jones index gaining more than 200 points on Tuesday.
The Dow traded up 0.50% to 42,509.79 while the NASDAQ rose 0.25% to 19,135.49. The S&P 500 also rose, gaining, 0.33% to 5,855.26.

Utilities shares rose by 1.1% on Tuesday.
In trading on Tuesday, health care shares tumbled by 1.6%.
Top Headline
U.S. producer prices rose 0.2% month-over-month in December compared to 0.4% in November, and versus market estimates of 0.3%.
Equities Trading UP
- Firefly Neuroscience, Inc. (NASDAQ:AIFF) shares shot up 88% to $3.58 after the company announced the advancement of research to assess a patient's brain age using its BNA technology platform.
- Shares of Nature’s Miracle Holding Inc. (NASDAQ:NMHI)got a boost, surging 96% to $2.20. Nature’s Miracle Holding announced that it entered into a Securities Purchase Agreement with a single institutional investor on Jan. 10, 2025.
- H&E Equipment Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:HEES) shares were also up, gaining 106% to $90.38 after United Rentals announced it will acquire the company for $92 per share in cash.
Equities Trading DOWN
- Phio Pharmaceuticals Corp. (NASDAQ:PHIO) shares dropped 52% to $55.91 after the company announced a $3.19 million registered direct offering.
- Shares of Signet Jewelers Limited (NYSE:SIG) were down 24% to $55.91 after the company reported a drop in total same store sales for the holiday season and lowered its fourth-quarter guidance.
- Mustang Bio, Inc. (NASDAQ:MBIO) was down, falling 37% to $0.1417 after the company announced a 1-for-50 reverse stock split.
Commodities
In commodity news, oil traded down 1.3% to $77.80 while gold traded up 0.2% at $2,683.80.
Silver traded up 0.4% to $30.425 on Tuesday, while copper rose 0.3% to $4.3375.
Euro zone
European shares were mixed today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 fell 0.08%, Germany's DAX 40 gained 0.69% and France's CAC 40 gained 0.20%. Spain's IBEX 35 Index gained 0.55%, while London's FTSE 100 slipped 0.28%.
Asia Pacific Markets
Asian markets closed mixed on Tuesday, with Japan's Nikkei 225 falling 1.83%, China's Shanghai Composite Index jumping 2.54%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index gaining 1.83% and India's BSE Sensex rising 0.22%.
Economics
- U.S. producer prices rose 0.2% month-over-month in December compared to 0.4% in November, and versus market estimates of 0.3%.
- The RealClearMarkets/TIPP Economic Optimism Index declined to 51.9 in January versus a reading of 54 in the previous month.
