Saudi Arabia – Alstom, a global leader in green and smart transportation, has signed a contract worth over €500 million with the Royal Commission for AlUla to build the innovative battery-powered AlUla Tram, the world's longest cable-free line .
Alstom's system will include 20 state-of-the-art Citadis B battery-powered trams. The 22.4-kilometre line combines heritage, history, and green mobility like no other. It connects 17 strategically located stations to provide seamless access to AlUla's five key historical areas, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Old City of AlUla (Area 1), Dadan (Area 2), Jabal Ikmah (Area 3), the Nabataean Theatre (Area 4), and the historic city of Hegra (Area 5) . This ambitious project aims to provide unique transportation options for residents and tourists through an innovative and climate-adapted tram .
Mohammed Khalil, General Manager of Alstom Saudi Arabia, explained: “The project is truly unique because it combines sustainability, passenger experience, and the beautiful surroundings in an area with a rich historical heritage and stunning monuments. It is more than just a tram, and we are very honored to have been selected by the Royal Commission for AlUla to implement this project, which will contribute to achieving many of the goals of Vision 2030, including Saudi Arabia’s focus on environmental conservation. We look forward to unveiling it to the world.”
Alstom plays a pivotal role in this project, from the overall system design to the integration, installation, testing, and commissioning of the battery-powered, cable-less tramway. The company will also provide power, signaling, communications, and depot equipment, and provide full maintenance for the tram for 10 years using HealthHub, Alstom's predictive maintenance and fleet management tool, to ensure the highest levels of uptime. Service teams will also use a mobile workshop for all types of repairs to be more flexible and reduce capital expenditure, and will provide robust training programs for tram staff, ensuring operational efficiency. The project will draw on Alstom's global expertise in integrated rail systems, with the tram being manufactured at French production sites, including the La Rochelle design and construction center .
It's worth noting that Alstom has been a trusted partner of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for over 70 years. The company supported the Haramain High-Speed Railway between Mecca and Medina, and supplied an integrated metro system for lines 3, 4, 5, and 6, as well as operating and maintaining these lines . Alstom also provided the automated people mover system for King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, which has been operating since 2020, and for which the company has been operating and maintaining since 2022 .
