In continuation of the "Dialogues" conference series
Next November, Georgetown University in Qatar continues to enrich dialogues and discussions that shape a sustainable future through the “Dialogues” series, by holding two conferences that shed light on two regional issues with international dimensions, namely the complex challenges facing Afghanistan and the future of water security in Qatar and the Gulf.
On November 11, the Center for International and Regional Studies at Georgetown University in Qatar will organize a conference entitled “The Regional Symposium on Afghanistan: Confronting the Impasse,” which aims to build a clear and accurate picture of the current challenges facing Afghanistan, and pave the way for thoughtful and impactful solutions.
The conference begins with a symposium on the systemic challenges facing education in Afghanistan, with the participation of prominent leaders and practitioners from Afghanistan, international academics and global peace advocates, most notably Fatima Jilani, former President of the Afghan Red Crescent Society and chief negotiator in the Afghan peace process talks held in Doha.
The panel discussion will also include Dr. Asmaa Al-Fadala, Director of Research and Content Development at the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), and Ambassador Melanie Verveer, Executive Director of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and former US Ambassador for Global Women’s Issues, in addition to Hamid Hakimi, one of the organizers of the symposium. A non-resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, he has extensive experience working as an international policy and capacity development advisor in Kabul during Afghanistan's political transition from 2014 to 2015.
Commenting on this conference, Dr. Safwan Al-Masry, Dean of Georgetown University in Qatar, said: “We designed a dialogue series to provide diverse academic and practice-based perspectives on the most prominent issues affecting millions in the region. This series contributes to formulating appropriate solutions.” And sustainable to meet ongoing challenges, and provides policy makers and thought leaders with deep and realistic analyzes that enrich their vision and enable them to make thoughtful and accurate decisions. The upcoming conferences will continue to apply this approach to enrich the regional dialogue enhanced by interaction between the participating experts and the attending audience.”
Georgetown University in Qatar is organizing the second conference entitled “Sustaining the Oasis: Envisioning the Future of Water Security in the Gulf” on November 12 and 13 in cooperation with the Earth Commons Institute of Georgetown University in Washington, DC. The conference discussions, with the participation of a global elite of the most prominent experts, policy makers and practitioners, will focus on studying the historical importance and future perspective of water in the region, and achieving a balance between human needs and environmental entitlements in the face of climate change.
The conference's high-level seminars and keynote addresses address many topics and issues, most notably examining the links between water, food, environmental security and environmental stewardship, practical initiatives in Qatar and the role of the Gulf countries in shaping a water-secure world. The conference program also includes joint sub-sessions, including those that address the risks of climate change in cooperation with the Qatar Foundation’s Heritage Center, and those that discuss non-conventional water resources in dry areas in cooperation with the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute.
The upcoming conferences, open to the general public at the Four Seasons Hotel in Doha, complement the achievements achieved in the first two conferences of the “Dialogues” series, which focused on the Iraqi issue on the twentieth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and combating the phenomenon of Islamophobia.
