Green Courts in Light of UAE Legislation and International Experiences
Participants in the forum "Green Government Buildings and Courts in Light of UAE Legislation and International Experiences... Sustainable Practices in the Buildings of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department", which was organized by the department, discussed the legal framework for green buildings and courts in the UAE, and policies for rehabilitating old buildings to keep pace with the challenges of climate change with the aim of achieving sustainable and green development, in line with the historic "UAE Agreement" at the COP28 Conference of the Parties.
In his opening speech, Ahmed Ibrahim Al Marzouqi, Executive Director of the Administrative Support Sector at the Department, explained that the forum comes in response to the pioneering results achieved by the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which was hosted by the UAE, and in line with the strategic directions of the Year of Sustainability 2023, and within the framework of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Presidential Court, and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, to continue supporting efforts to establish a pioneering legal and judicial system that contributes to addressing challenges and providing innovative solutions to support the competitiveness of the emirate.
Al Marzouqi pointed out the department’s keenness to adhere to the principles of sustainability and adopt the best green and international practices in its buildings, invest in renewable energy, reduce consumption and improve energy efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions, to contribute to combating climate change and achieving sustainability and environmental development.
The forum, moderated by Counselor Abdullah Faris Al Nuaimi, President of the Abu Dhabi Labour Court, discussed the role of governments in sustaining infrastructure, promoting environmentally friendly practices and reducing carbon emissions to create a more sustainable future, key strategies for promoting green building laws, and presenting experiences and models of green courts and their importance in supporting environmental protection efforts.
The forum highlighted sustainable practices in the buildings of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, where the department participated in a number of initiatives and implemented pioneering steps with the aim of enhancing sustainability, including; installing solar panels in parking lots and buildings, participating in initiatives to reduce paper consumption, initiatives to reduce plastic packaging consumption, and implementing a large number of awareness workshops, in addition to implementing a number of energy consumption reduction initiatives that contributed to achieving a qualitative leap in supporting the green footprint of its buildings.
The forum addressed the UAE legislation related to green buildings and comparative international experiences, and the most prominent conditions and specifications of green buildings. It also addressed the sources of environmental pollution in all sectors in general and buildings and infrastructure in particular, the experience of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the “Sustainability” program to reduce energy, water and waste, and the importance of environmental incentives and taxes in achieving sustainable development.
