The LiqTech International, Inc. (NASDAQ:LIQT) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 26%. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 8.6% over the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, LiqTech International may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Machinery industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.8x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has LiqTech International Performed Recently?

With revenue that's retreating more than the industry's average of late, LiqTech International has been very sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the dismal revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the revenue slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like LiqTech International's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 18%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 16% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the lone analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 36% over the next year. With the industry only predicted to deliver 0.5%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this information, we find it odd that LiqTech International is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Key Takeaway

Despite LiqTech International's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

To us, it seems LiqTech International currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.

You need to take note of risks, for example - LiqTech International has 4 warning signs (and 2 which are potentially serious) we think you should know about.
