Applied Intuition Unveils ‘Drone Stack’ as AI Redefines the Future of Warfare
Applied Intuition has introduced a new autonomy software platform to help military and commercial drone operators deploy artificial intelligence capabilities across aircraft platforms, as defense companies increasingly focus on software-driven warfare.
The company unveiled Drone Stack, a modular autonomy package designed for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and strike missions across a range of unmanned aircraft. The platform is intended to allow operators to move autonomous capabilities between airframes rather than relying on systems tied to a single drone manufacturer, the company stated.
The launch comes as the war in Ukraine reshaped military thinking around unmanned systems, particularly the push toward producing large numbers of lower-cost, adaptable platforms. Applied Intuition said the conflict has accelerated interest in "affordable mass," where fleets of autonomous systems can provide capabilities once reserved for smaller numbers of more expensive platforms.
"In today’s operational environments, threats emerge and move faster than traditional cycles can respond," Applied Intuition CEO and co-founder Qasar Younis said. "Warfighters need autonomy across dozens or even hundreds of platforms simultaneously, while maintaining safety, precision, and reliability. This is what Drone Stack was built for."
The company said traditional defense development cycles often struggle to keep pace with rapidly changing battlefield conditions, creating demand for software that can be updated and deployed more quickly.
Unlike vertically integrated drone systems where autonomy software is built around a specific aircraft, Drone Stack is designed to operate independently of the underlying airframe. The company said that approach could allow customers to integrate new capabilities across different platforms without being locked into a single hardware ecosystem.
Drone Stack includes tools for mission planning, autonomous navigation, coordination between multiple aircraft, target detection and tracking, and automated target recognition. The system is designed to support operations in environments where GPS signals may be disrupted or unavailable.
A core component of the platform is Axle, an embedded computing system that Applied Intuition said is built from data collected across multiple vehicle categories. The company said the hardware can be configured for different drone sizes, including larger tactical systems and smaller platforms where weight, power and cost are key constraints.
Matthew Niemiec, head of aerial autonomy at Applied Intuition’s drone center in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, said the company is focused on reducing the engineering work required to integrate autonomous software into aircraft.
"By delivering our autonomy software on a pre-validated, embedded hardware circuit card, we eliminate the software integration burden for customers who simply want to focus on building a great airplane," Niemiec said.
Applied Intuition said Drone Stack is already being used by commercial and government customers, though it did not disclose specific users or contract details.
The launch reflects a broader shift in defense technology toward modular, software-based platforms as governments and contractors look for faster ways to develop and adapt autonomous systems. Companies including Anduril Industries and Shield AI have similarly emphasized AI-enabled autonomy as a core component of next-generation military capabilities.
