Insiders who bought Team, Inc. (NYSE:TISI) stock in the last 12 months were richly rewarded last week. The company's market value increased by US$27m as a result of the stock's 36% gain over the same period. As a result, their original purchase of US$581.3k worth of stock is now worth US$839.9k.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Team Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Lead Independent Director Anthony Horton made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$193k worth of shares at a price of US$16.19 each. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$22.71), we still think insider buying is a positive. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$581k for 36.98k shares. On the other hand they divested 1.57k shares, for US$23k. Overall, Team insiders were net buyers during the last year. Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 6.6% of Team shares, worth about US$5.0m, according to our data. Whilst better than nothing, we're not overly impressed by these holdings.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Team Tell Us?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. While the overall levels of insider ownership are below what we'd like to see, the history of transactions imply that Team insiders are reasonably well aligned, and optimistic for the future. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
