We wouldn't blame Medpace Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:MEDP) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that August Troendle, the CEO, President & Chairman recently netted about US$26m selling shares at an average price of US$614. However, it's crucial to note that they remain very much invested in the stock and that sale only reduced their holding by 0.8%.

Medpace Holdings Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In fact, the recent sale by CEO, President & Chairman August Troendle was not their only sale of Medpace Holdings shares this year. Earlier in the year, they fetched US$616 per share in a -US$62m sale. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even slightly below the current price of US$621. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 1.8% of August Troendle's holding.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Medpace Holdings insiders own 20% of the company, worth about US$3.4b. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Medpace Holdings Insiders?

Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. But since Medpace Holdings is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. While insiders do own a lot of shares in the company (which is good), our analysis of their transactions doesn't make us feel confident about the company. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
