We wouldn't blame Unum Group (NYSE:UNM) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Elizabeth A. Ahmed, the Executive Vice President of People & Communications recently netted about US$962k selling shares at an average price of US$80.14. That sale reduced their total holding by 30% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

Unum Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent sale by Elizabeth A. Ahmed is the biggest insider sale of Unum Group shares that we've seen in the last year. That means that an insider was selling shares at below the current price (US$80.32). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 30% of Elizabeth A. Ahmed's holding.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Unum Group insiders own 0.9% of the company, currently worth about US$120m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
