June 11 (Reuters) - More than 488,000 homes and businesses were without power late Wednesday as severe storms battered the U.S. Midwest region, according to data from PowerOutage.us.
Illinois was the hardest hit, with about 252,000 outages - roughly 4.3% of the state's 5.8 million customers, according to the data.
The hardest-hit utility was a unit of Commonwealth Edison Company in Illinois, where around 232,800 homes and businesses were without service.
"The first wave of severe storms moving through northern Illinois has caused significant damage across the area, including downed poles and wires, leading to widespread customer interruptions," Commonwealth Edison Company said in a post on X.
Michigan had the second-highest number of outages, with about 117,600 customers without power. The hardest-hit utility in the region was a Consumers Energy unit with roughly 98,000 outages.
"Our crews are working across the state and throughout the night to address outages and get you back online quickly and safely," Consumers Energy said in a post on X.
