GRAINS-Chicago corn, wheat climb on USDA data; soybeans ease
BEIJING, July 1 (Reuters) - Chicago corn futures edged higher on Wednesday, supported by a U.S. Department of Agriculture estimate of tighter U.S. stocks, while wheat rose after the agency pegged U.S. plantings and quarterly stocks below trade expectations.
Soybeans slipped as the USDA estimated larger stocks and a jump in U.S. plantings, while ample global supplies also added pressure.
FUNDAMENTALS
* The most-active corn contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) Cv1 rose 0.3% to $4.18 a bushel by 0131 GMT, while wheat Wv1 climbed 0.51% to $5.92-1/4 a bushel. Soybeans Sv1 lost 0.33% to $11.4 a bushel.
* In its quarterly report, the USDA pegged June 1 wheat stocks at 920 million bushels and corn stocks at 5.295 billion, both below analyst estimates, while soybean stocks topped expectations at 1.061 billion.
* In its annual acreage report, the USDA pegged U.S. corn plantings at 95.343 million acres, above trade expectations but down from 2025 and still the fourth largest since 1944. Wheat acres fell to 42.740 million, below estimates, while soybean plantings rose to 85.365 million, in line with expectations.
* Hot weather across the U.S. Midwest this week was expected to stress the soybean and corn crops before easing later this week, forecasters said.
* Wheat futures drew support from robust export demand. The USDA confirmed private sales of 100,000 metric tons of U.S. hard red spring wheat to Nigeria for delivery in the 2026/27 marketing year that began on June 1.
* Swift U.S. harvest progress and strong production prospects in the Black Sea export region continued weigh on wheat prices.
