We'd be surprised if Interface, Inc. (NASDAQ:TILE) shareholders haven't noticed that the Chief Commercial Officer & VP, James Poppens, recently sold US$384k worth of stock at US$38.43 per share. On the bright side, that sale was only 9.6% of their holding, so we doubt it's very meaningful, on its own.

Interface Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The VP & CFO, Bruce Hausmann, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.5m worth of shares at a price of US$29.66 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$38.53). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 39% of Bruce Hausmann's stake.

In the last year Interface insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Does Interface Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 2.4% of Interface shares, worth about US$54m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Do The Interface Insider Transactions Indicate?

Insiders sold Interface shares recently, but they didn't buy any. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying. On the plus side, Interface makes money, and is growing profits. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. We'd practice some caution before buying! So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
