We wouldn't blame Newell Brands Inc. (NASDAQ:NWL) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Bradford Turner, the Chief Legal & Administrative Officer and Corporate Secretary recently netted about US$616k selling shares at an average price of US$6.16. That sale reduced their total holding by 19% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

Newell Brands Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In fact, the recent sale by Bradford Turner was the biggest sale of Newell Brands shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$6.15. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Insider Ownership Of Newell Brands

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Newell Brands insiders own 1.5% of the company, worth about US$37m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Newell Brands Tell Us?

Insiders haven't bought Newell Brands stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. Insiders own shares, but we're still pretty cautious, given the history of sales. So we'd only buy after careful consideration. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
