We wouldn't blame Plexus Corp. (NASDAQ:PLXS) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Todd Kelsey, the President recently netted about US$1.7m selling shares at an average price of US$267. However, that sale only accounted for 8.0% of their holding, so arguably it doesn't say much about their conviction.

Plexus Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Non-Executive Chairman, Dean Foate, sold US$2.1m worth of shares at a price of US$205 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$261). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 8.0% of Dean Foate's stake.

I will like Plexus better if I see some big insider buys.

Does Plexus Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Plexus insiders own 1.6% of the company, worth about US$111m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Plexus Insiders?

Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. But since Plexus is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. While insiders do own a lot of shares in the company (which is good), our analysis of their transactions doesn't make us feel confident about the company. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.

Of course Plexus may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of high quality companies.
