Lowe’s Companies stock barely flinched after earnings, slipping about 0.6% to roughly US$216. For a retailer that just printed about US$26.0b in quarterly sales and US$4.27 in earnings per share, that muted move suggests investors are conflicted. The headline is not the top line; it is the pressure on profitability.

Adjusted operating margin landed at 14% with gross margin at 33%. Both figures reflect tightening profitability in a business that depends heavily on every basis point of spread between product cost and ticket price. The market is treating that margin squeeze as a manageable annoyance, not a thesis changer, at least for now.

Lowe’s bull story leans on Pro and digital

Bulls argue Lowe’s can offset a soft housing backdrop as Pro growth, FBM and digital tools widen the addressable market and support better margins over time. Q2 shows some of that playing out. Sales rose 8.3% to about US$26.0b even as comps were only up 0.2%, which points to new stores and acquired FBM and ADG volumes doing work. Pro categories like rough plumbing, millwork, electrical, lumber and tools were called out as growth areas, and Home Services and online both added support. Online revenue grew 15.7%, with the Mylow AI agent lifting conversion roughly 3x for users, a concrete productivity and sales milestone. At the same time, SG&A leveraged modestly and PPI cost programs helped keep adjusted operating margin at 14%. The growth engines in the bullish narrative are visible. They are just not yet powerful enough to fully offset pressure elsewhere.

Margin squeeze and housing soft patch fuel the bears

The cautious view is that higher leverage, housing weakness and cost pressure will cap Lowe’s earnings power. Q2 margins give that view fresh backing. Gross margin sat at 33% and adjusted operating margin at 14%, both lower year on year even after roughly 30 bps of tariff refund help. Management cut full year 2026 guidance to about US$92b of sales with roughly flat comps and expects Q3 adjusted EPS to land about 7% below last year. That points to limited near term operating leverage despite PPI savings and digital productivity wins. Residential exposure at FBM and ADG is under pressure from weak new home construction, which management explicitly builds into guidance. Leverage at 3.0x adjusted debt to EBITDA, with a target of 2.75x only by mid 2027, keeps capital returns constrained and leaves little room for error if demand stays sluggish.

With leverage high, guidance trimmed and housing exposure under strain, the real question is whether these are temporary headwinds or early signs of deeper balance sheet and execution risks.
