Marjorie Taylor Greene Slams Trump's Gas Tax Plan As 'Bread Crumbs' As Pump Prices Touch $4.52, Says Temporary Cut Won't 'Really Help Americans'

Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) criticized the Trump administration on Monday for considering a temporary federal gas tax suspension, arguing that removing 18.4 cents per gallon would offer little relief when the national average price is about $4.52 and should instead be made permanent.

Greene Says Gas Tax Cut Falls Short

Greene took to X to state, "Trump admin is considering temporarily removing the 18.4 cents federal gas tax, which requires a vote from Congress, sure get rid of it entirely," before adding, "But the national price of gas would not be $4.52 today if Trump had never gone to war with Iran on behalf of Israel, and taking off 18.4 cents isn't really going to help Americans that much!"

She went on to write, "And America produces enough oil to be self sufficient, we shouldn't be getting gouged at the pump anyway. The America LAST failures for decades from leaders in Washington D.C. have over-regulated, blocked land leases, and prevented more refineries from being built, which all led to consistently unnecessary high gas prices. Instead of helping Americans, they pursued and continue to pursue WARS in the Middle East. Yes, please do throw the peasants some more bread crumbs. But at least make it permanent!"

Trump Floats Temporary Relief As Prices Surge

Greene was responding after President Donald Trump said Monday he supported suspending the federal gasoline tax as prices surged during the Iran war. "I think it's a great idea," Trump told CBS News, before adding, "Yup, we're going to take off the gas tax for a period of time, and when gas goes down, we'll let it phase back in."

That said, an Associated Press report notes that the President cannot suspend the tax on his own. Congress would have to approve the move. The federal tax is 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon on diesel, and it helps fund highways and public transit programs.

The average national gas price stood at $4.52 a gallon Monday, according to AAA data, about 50% higher than before the Iran conflict.

Greene Deepens Break With Trump's Foreign Policy

Greene, who fell out with Trump last fall before resigning her Georgia seat in January, has become a sharp critic of his foreign policy, previously accusing Trump of abandoning "No More Foreign Wars" pledges and criticized his Iran posture as "everything we voted against."

Ahead of tax day on April 15 last month, Greene also backed a "2026 tax revolt," arguing that Americans should withhold federal income taxes until Washington stops funding foreign aid and wars, saying taxpayers were "fed up" with a government they believe does not serve them.
