Southern went into this earnings print with the stock drifting over the past quarter, yet the immediate reaction was muted. The share price edged only 0.2% higher to US$94.54, which does not fully reflect how firm this quarter looked on its headline figures. Adjusted earnings per share of US$1.13 and year to date adjusted EPS of US$2.46 place Southern near the top end of its full year guidance range and put the focus squarely on how durable that earnings power can be.

Is Southern fairly priced at a 22.9x trailing P/E that sits above peers, or is the market already pricing in too much growth? Compare the stock’s current multiples and cash flows against our valuation analysis for Southern

Southern’s AI Load Story Clears Key Milestones

Bulls argue Southern Company is building a long runway of regulated growth as AI and data centers drive large, contracted load and justify a bigger rate base. Q2 results give that view more substance. Adjusted EPS of US$1.13 and US$2.46 year to date track near the top of full year guidance, helped by higher usage and customer growth rather than only cost cutting. Weather normal retail sales grew 2.3% in the first half, the strongest first half in nearly 20 years. Data center usage rose 55% in Q2 with system load now above 1.2 GW. Management added about 6 GW of new contracted large load in the quarter and now has more than 17 GW signed into the mid 2030s, with about 8 GW in late stage discussions. Recent approvals of roughly 10 GW of company owned resources reinforce that regulators are already authorizing capacity to serve this growth.

Growth, Dilution And Regulatory Risk Still Shadow Southern

Bears worry that capital intensity, equity issuance and regulatory limits on bills could eventually cap Southern Company’s earnings power even with strong AI driven demand. Q2 results partly validate those concerns. Management leaned on proactive equity issuance, including a US$700m at the market program through 2028, on top of roughly US$2b already settled. Remaining projected equity needs of US$1.1b by 2030 keep dilution on the table. Higher interest expense and share count already offset some operating strength in the quarter. Rate freezes at Georgia Power and Alabama Power through 2029 and pledges to protect customers strengthen regulatory relationships but also restrict pricing flexibility if project costs rise. Large load contracts are structured to cover incremental costs and include minimum bills and collateral, which addresses some credit and repricing risk. However, the long dated capex plan and growing debt target still leave execution and balance sheet risks firmly in view.
