We'd be surprised if Spire Inc. (NYSE:SR) shareholders haven't noticed that the Senior VP and Chief Customer & Information Officer, Ryan Hyman, recently sold US$308k worth of stock at US$80.51 per share. That sale was 21% of their holding, so it does make us raise an eyebrow.

Spire Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent sale by Ryan Hyman is the biggest insider sale of Spire shares that we've seen in the last year. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$79.10. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Does Spire Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 0.5% of Spire shares, worth about US$24m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Do The Spire Insider Transactions Indicate?

The insider sales have outweighed the insider buying, at Spire, in the last three months. Despite some insider buying, the longer term picture doesn't make us feel much more positive. But since Spire is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. We're in no rush to buy! While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
