UPDATE 1-Brazil to seek US explanation over 'terrorist' label for drug gangs
Recasts with details from another interview, context
SAO PAULO, June 1 (Reuters) - Brazilian Finance Minister Dario Durigan said on Monday he will reach out to U.S. officials this week to better understand the reasons behind the Trump administration's decision to designate Brazil's two largest drug gangs as "terrorist" organizations.
Durigan said in interviews with local outlets CBN and SBT News that Brasilia was not contacted by Washington ahead of the designation decision on Thursday.
"If the U.S. knows something about these gangs that we don't, just get in touch," he said, urging cooperation to fight organized crime.
The minister had previously said the move could impact Latin America's largest economy on several fronts, including by jeopardizing foreign investments.
On Monday, he cited more potential impacts, such as banks charging higher fees due to an increase in risks.
Durigan warned that Brazilian lenders could face U.S. sanctions because of the designation.
