Adds context; updates shares

- Cloud infrastructure firm CoreWeave CRWV.O said on Friday it has struck a deal with Anthropic to supply the AI startup with cloud computing capacity, sending its shares up about 4% in early trading.

The multi-year agreement, whose financial terms were not disclosed, will bring computing capacity for Anthropic online later this year and help it run workloads for its Claude family of AI models.

  • The partnership will initially focus on a phased infrastructure rollout, with the potential to expand in the future, the companies said.

  • The Anthropic deal is the latest in a series of agreements that CoreWeave has signed in recent months, thanks to surging demand for computing power required to develop and run AI models.

  • CoreWeave struck an $11.9 billion deal with OpenAI last year, a $6.3 billion initial order with Nvidia NVDA.O in September and an expanded $21 billion deal with Meta META.O on Thursday.

  • The deal with Anthropic would also help CoreWeave diversify its revenue streams further - Microsoft accounted for about 67% of its revenue last year, and Meta is now among its largest customers.

  • Anthropic has been rushing to secure more capacity. Earlier this week, it signed a deal with Broadcom AVGO.O and Google GOOGL.O for AI capacity, while Reuters exclusively reported on Thursday that Anthropic was exploring the possibility of designing its own chips.

  • CoreWeave, a so-called neocloud, offers hardware and cloud capacity as services to other tech firms. Its close ties with Nvidia have made it a key supplier of advanced AI chips that large AI and tech companies seek.
