US Treasury, Commerce and USTR to give Trump Spanish product options for trade embargo
WASHINGTON, July 8 (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury will work with the Commerce Department and the U.S. Trade Representative's office to present President Donald Trump with a menu of Spanish products that could be subjected to a U.S. trade embargo in coming days, a U.S. official said on Wednesday.
The official's comment came in response to a Reuters query on next steps after Trump ordered U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to halt all trade with Spain, including tourism visits, as he expressed frustration over Spain's refusal to commit to NATO's target for member countries' defense spending to reach 5% of their GDP.
"Treasury will be working with USTR and Commerce to provide POTUS a menu of Spanish products that may be embargoed in the coming days," the official said without elaborating, using an acronym for "president of the United States".
