Abu Dhabi: Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi launched the Ocean Institute on December 9 at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28 ), during a conference dedicated to “ Ocean Monitoring, a Key to Climate Change. ” This announcement was made by Professor Nathalie Marcial Praz, Director of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, and Admiral Christophe Prazuck , Director of the Ocean Institute of the Sorbonne University in Paris, and former Chief of Staff of the French Navy.

Speaking at the conference, Professor Marcial Braz said: “Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is very proud today of this new launch as part of its commitment to contribute to the development of ocean research in the UAE and to provide responsive and innovative approaches to this essential area of research using traditional research and augmented observatories.”
Professor Marcial Braz explained that the establishment of this world-class research institute in Abu Dhabi, as a sister institute to the Ocean Institute at the Sorbonne University in Paris (l'Institut de l'Océan) , is in line with the university's endeavors to build interdisciplinary and cross-border research and achieve synergies that will have a real impact. The Ocean Institute is aligned with the University's strategic initiatives and one of its main research objectives is to develop its Environmental Research Center and support its commitment to enhancing the knowledge economy in the UAE.

The University's Ocean Sciences Research Institute will be a multidisciplinary research institute that brings together scientific experts from distinct fields such as ocean sciences, environmental sciences, anthropology, economics, archaeology and social sciences, along with public and private sector stakeholders, decision makers and civil society to define priorities and ensure a broader consensus. “The ultimate goal of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Institute is to develop targeted, systems-thinking strategies for monitoring coastal socio-ecological systems across multiple scales and disciplines,” said Admiral Christophe Prazuck, Director of the Ocean Institute of the Paris-Sorbonne and former Chief of Staff of the French Navy.
He added: “With the development and dissemination of data-intensive approaches to monitoring biodiversity and societal uses, the Institute will produce a huge amount of new and disparate data that will contribute to the development of research in the UAE.”
The Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi Ocean Institute will provide deep strategic thinking on how best to structure, access and preserve new and existing data in line with the FAIR principles. The institute is expected to begin its first research project in 2024 focusing on environmentally sensitive sites, such as vulnerable waterfronts (Fujairah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi), marine protected areas, and mangroves that will be used as models and practical examples.
