SEOUL, Korea – OpenAI, Samsung Electronics, and its subsidiaries Samsung SDS , Samsung C&T , and Samsung Heavy Industries announced the signing of a Letter of Intent for a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the development of global AI data center infrastructure and collaborating on future technologies in areas including semiconductors, data centers, shipbuilding, cloud computing, and marine technologies. The signing ceremony was held at Samsung’s headquarters in Seoul, attended by Young-hyun Jun, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics, Sung-an Choi, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries, Seochul Oh, President and CEO of Samsung C&T , and Junhee Lee, President and CEO of Samsung SDS .

Samsung Electronics

Samsung Electronics will collaborate with OpenAI as a strategic memory partner to provide advanced semiconductor solutions under OpenAI 's global Stargate initiative. With OpenAI's demand expected to reach approximately 900,000 DRAM chips per month, Samsung will help meet this demand with its extensive portfolio of high-performance, power-efficient DRAM solutions. As a complete semiconductor solutions provider, Samsung's leading technologies span memory, logic circuits, and foundries, with a diverse portfolio of products that support the entire AI workflow from training to inference. The company also boasts advanced capabilities in chip packaging and semiconductor integration between memory and systems, enabling it to offer unique solutions tailored to OpenAI's needs.

Samsung SDS

Samsung SDS has entered into a prospective partnership with OpenAI to develop AI data centers and provide enterprise AI services. Leveraging its expertise in advanced data center technologies, Samsung SDS will collaborate with OpenAI to design, develop, and operate Stargate AI data centers. Under the letter of intent, Samsung SDS will provide consulting, implementation, and management services to companies seeking to integrate OpenAI 's AI models into their internal systems. The company has also signed a partnership agreement to resell OpenAI services in Korea and plans to support local companies in adopting ChatGPT Enterprise offerings.

Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries

Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries will collaborate with OpenAI to advance the development of global AI data centers, with a particular focus on the joint development of floating data centers. These centers offer a promising alternative to traditional data centers, helping to address land scarcity, reduce cooling costs, and reduce carbon emissions. However, their technical complexity has so far limited their widespread adoption. Leveraging their proprietary technologies, the two companies will also explore opportunities to implement projects in the areas of floating power plants and control centers, along with floating data center infrastructure. Building on this historic partnership with OpenAI , Samsung intends to support Korea's goal of becoming one of the world's top three AI nations and create new opportunities in this sector. Samsung is also exploring opportunities to expand the adoption of ChatGPT within its businesses to accelerate AI transformation in the workplace .
