PRESSR: Sultan Al Qasimi witnesses the launch of the activities of the First Sharjah International Conference for Arabic Language Studies in Europe
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, Supreme President of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, confirmed that the emirate is continuing efforts to support, disseminate, educate and teach the Arabic language in various parts of the world, and to preserve it from extinction, pointing to the succession of projects related to it. Such as the historical dictionary of the Arabic language, which includes the history of the language and those who used it, which enriches the knowledge and culture of the learner, speaker, and student of the Arabic language.
This came during His Highness’ attendance at the launch of the activities of the First Sharjah International Conference for Arabic Language Studies in Europe, this Sunday morning, which is organized by the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, under the slogan “Arabic Studies in Europe: Reality and Prospects,” at the House of Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi, with large participation from Scientists, Orientalists and Arabists from different European countries.
His Highness welcomed the guests of the conference, scholars and professors of the Arabic language from various countries, in the United Arab Emirates and the Emirate of Sharjah, saying: His Highness: “We welcome you to Sharjah, where you will find that the Arabic language is being taken full care of, teaching it, protecting it, and putting it in a dictionary that collects it so that we do not find it.” Some of those who Arabize foreign words cause students to get confused //.
His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah discussed the idea of a historical dictionary of the Arabic language, which 500 specialists and linguists are working on, pointing out the continuation of projects to preserve the Arabic language through many distinguished initiatives such as conferences and others, saying: “5 years ago we started the project of a historical dictionary of the Arabic language, with permission.” By God, next year, at this time, we will have completed 110 volumes, each volume containing 750 pages. The dictionary does not only explain words, but it contains history, knowledge, and everything a person needs, to learn about the history of this language, who used it before, and how it was used. God willing, after the completion of the dictionary project, we will begin another project that is no less important, as we support Arabic from time to time with projects to preserve this language from disappearing. We are trying to reach those who love this language and those who are thirsty for it, whether in Africa, Asia, or Europe, but to find all language lovers gathering here in Sharjah, this alone is a gain from the gains of preserving this language //.
At the conclusion of His Highness’s speech, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah reviewed the importance of caring for the Arabic language in many aspects that complement each other within multiple stages aimed at preserving and disseminating it, through institutional support, saying His Highness: “This language wants to be cared for, not just in preserving it.” But in speaking it, and speaking it requires teaching it, and this teaching requires help, and we are with you in that, and we are certain that you are all from institutions working to advance the Arabic language, whether you work in libraries, universities, etc., and we will work to support you morally, materially, and morally so that you can achieve. The opening of the conference began with clear verses from the Holy Qur’an, recited by Dr. Bahaa Dendis, after which Dr. Amhamed Safi Al Mosteghanemi, Secretary General of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, delivered a welcoming speech to the participants in the first conference of its kind that deals with Arabic language studies in Europe, and in which hearts meet in peace. In her speech, Anastasia praised the great roles played by the Emirate of Sharjah in everything related to the Arabic language and knowledge, which made it occupy a high position in the sky of culture and knowledge, and called on those far and near to come to it for its scientific orientations, its civilizational vision, its cultural identity, and its support for literature, poetry, theater, and other literary arts. She noted To the importance of the conference in dealing with the affairs of Arabic language studies in Europe, both eastern and western, and examining its issues, learning about its reality, and coming up with solutions and proposals that will increase the dissemination of Arabic there, and teach it to new generations, addressing the components of the Arabic language as one of the most important major languages in the world and the characteristics and advantages that made it take the lead. At the conclusion of her speech, Anastasia reviewed the love of the Arabic language among non-native speakers as a decision and choice that agreed with their souls after learning about its aesthetics, through study and communication, and its acquisition of immortality through its association with the Holy Qur’an and the great heritage of poetry, literature, and the philosophical and scientific works that were written in the era of blogging and cultural openness.
His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, and the attendees, witnessed the first session of the conference, which was entitled: “The Reality of the Arabic Language in Poland, Kazakhstan and Italy,” and was chaired by Dr. Abdullah Al-Washmi, Secretary-General of the King Salman Academy for the Arabic Language in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Dr. Barbara Michalak from Poland presented the first paper entitled: “One Hundred Years of Studies of the Arabic Language and Literature at Jagiellonski University in Krakowen, Poland,” in which she addressed the beginning of the spread of interest in the Arabic language in Europe in general and in Poland through the geographical expansion of the Arabs and the travels of travelers, addressing the most important Polish orientalists. Those who loved the Arabic language and expanded it with great efforts and wrote a number of books in it, as the growth of Orientalist sciences led to the development of Polish literature that dealt with the East region. Barbara pointed to the interest of the University of Krakow in the Arabic language through the Department of Orientalism dating back to the year 1919 AD and the efforts of senior scholars and professors. Dr. Ikhtiyar Baltouri from Kazakhstan presented a paper entitled: “The Arabic Language in Kazakhstan: Past, Present, and Prospects for Cooperation with European Institutions,” in which he pointed to the great connection of the Republic of Kazakhstan with Arab and Islamic countries since ancient times, pointing out the presence of many Arabic vocabulary and structures in the Kazakh language. Historically, in addition to the spread of the Arabic language, he stressed the great importance of the conference in opening channels of cooperation for them with many European universities and institutions to support teaching and learning the Arabic language.
The session was concluded by Dr. Francesca Quaro from Italy with a paper titled: “Translating and Teaching Arabic Poetry in Italy,” in which she reviewed the history of the introduction of the Arabic language to the island of Sicily in the third century AH, where teaching the Arabic language began with the entry and presence of Arab intellectuals there, and discussed her experience with many poets. Italians are fans of the Arabic language, translating Arabic poetry into Italian, and organizing many forums.
The conference, which will be organized on October 29 and 30, seeks to shed light on the reality of the Arabic language in European countries, monitor the Arab linguistic presence within it, and consider research and studies written by Arabists and Orientalists in linguistic and literary matters and in the field of Arab studies, based on the message of the Language Academy. More than 22 participants from 11 European countries are participating in the conference sessions, including Italy, Poland, Germany, Spain, France, Kazakhstan, Russia, France, Turkey, Austria, and Denmark.
The conference aims to monitor the reality of the Arabic language in the countries of the European continent, diagnose the current conditions of Arab culture there, build bridges of knowledge cooperation and cultural exchange between the Academy and international institutions and global centers concerned with teaching the Arabic language and linguistic studies, and employ global expertise and innovative methods in serving the Arabic language and disseminating them in Countries of the European continent, empowering researchers and scholars in European countries with methods of teaching Arabic and how to teach it to non-Arabic speakers, opening horizons of cooperation with centers and institutions concerned with this, and exchanging expertise, studies and experiences between Arab researchers and Arabized scholars in Europe to find more effective ways to teach Arabic and disseminate it. He published it verbally and in writing.
In its first edition, the conference addresses many areas, including: Arabic studies that embody the reality of the Arabic language in Europe, innovative research in the field of learning and teaching the Arabic language, and practical experiences and living practices in the fields of the Arabic language and Islamic studies.
The second day of the conference will witness 3 sessions, the first entitled “Teaching the Arabic Language in France, Kazakhstan, Germany, and Spain,” and moderated by the researcher at the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, Dr. Bahaa El-Din Dendis, with the participation of Dr. Muhammad Bakhoush from France, and Dr. Yerkenbek Shogai from Kazakhstan. Dr. Sebastian Günther from Germany, and Dr. Abdel Hadi Sadoun from Spain.
The second session discusses “The reality of Arab studies in Kazakhstan, Turkey, and Italy,” moderated by Dr. Abdel Fattah Al-Haqmari, Director of the Arabization Coordination Center in Rabat, and hosting Dr. Samal Tuliubayeva from Kazakhstan, Dr. Muhammad Haqqi Sawchin from Turkey, and Dr. Aqeel Merhi and Dr. Giuliano from Italy.
