Hyatt announced significant progress in implementing its environmental initiatives, specifically highlighting its hotels in Dubai that embody dedication to the planet, its people, and responsible business practices.
At the beginning of 2023, all Hyatt hotels in Dubai began implementing the paperless initiative with the aim of reducing the use of papers, following which the Grand Hyatt Dubai announced that it would completely dispense with the use of papers within a period not exceeding 12 months.
In line with the UAE’s National Green Agenda 2030, the remaining nine Hyatt hotels in the city are scheduled to go paperless by December 31, 2023.
Sustainability has always been a major concern of the Hyatt Hotels Group (Hyatt), and today it once again confirms its firm commitment to this matter, by implementing a variety of influential initiatives in its ten hotels in Dubai, in an effort to enhance environmental responsibility and preserve the environment. .
Hyatt has made significant progress in implementing its global strategy related to environmental, social and corporate governance practices, especially after developing the “World of Care” initiative, which is concerned with engaging key stakeholders with the most important events and affairs in the communities in which Hyatt operates around the world. Between striving to reduce the use of paper and plastic and reduce food waste, Hyatt teams in Dubai are constantly working to improve the parent brand’s operations in line with its environmental goals for the year 2030, focusing on issues of climate change, water conservation, waste, circular economy, and responsible use of resources. And create thriving destinations. Paperless initiative
As part of its efforts to reduce the use of papers, at the beginning of 2023, Hyatt launched a paperless initiative in all of its hotels in Dubai, after which these hotels began efforts to digitize their documents. As of August 2023, the ten hotels in Dubai have printed 1.4 million fewer sheets of paper compared to the same period last year, resulting in a 48% reduction in sheets printed during the summer season. In November 2023, Grand Hyatt Dubai achieved its goal of completely going paperless within a period not exceeding 12 months, paving the way towards more sustainable and innovative operational practices. As for the remaining nine hotels in the city, they are expected to achieve their similar goal by December 31, 2023.
Hyatt hotels in Dubai have adopted the use of digital business cards and QR code-based menus in their guest rooms and restaurants, eliminating the need to use traditional paper alternatives. Furthermore, these hotels have begun using digital logs to track guest requests, guest records, and room updates.
Reduce the use of single-use plastic
Hyatt is also making significant progress in its commitment to environmental sustainability by implementing various initiatives aimed at reducing the use of plastic in all of its hotels in Dubai, which underscores the company's commitment to environmentally friendly practices and responsible hospitality. Hyatt hotels in Dubai also make efforts to preserve the beauty of the natural environment, as the Park Hyatt Dubai cleans Dubai Creek every 4 months to remove plastic waste from its banks.
Furthermore, many restaurants within these hotels have taken steps to dispense with single-use plastic straws, replacing them with #iamnotplastic straws that are 100% biodegradable. These restaurants are also working to replace plastic cutlery and take-out containers with more sustainable wooden alternatives.
As a step to reduce the use of single-use plastic, Hyatt Place hotels have installed bulk dispensing devices, such as shampoo, conditioner and body wash, in all bathrooms and shower areas in guest rooms. Likewise, Hyatt Centric Jumeirah has distributed The BeeKind® Collection products in all guest rooms, which are gentle on the skin and free of harmful ingredients such as parabens, phthalates, ingredients derived from benzene, mineral oil, urea or diethanolamine. or triethylamine or propylene glycol, packaged in recyclable containers. The Hyatt Regency Creek Heights Hotel also replaced plastic laundry bags with biodegradable ones, in an effort to reinforce its commitment to environmental sustainability.
It is worth noting that the ten hotels have set themselves the goal of completely abandoning the use of plastic by 2024, especially since continuously enhancing sustainability efforts is vital to Hyatt Hotels’ strategy in Dubai.
Rationalization of energy consumption
As part of its 2030 environmental goals, Hyatt is working hard to address climate and water issues, by implementing measures that will rationalize energy consumption, prioritize water conservation in drought-prone areas, and significantly increase the use of renewable energy and gray water.
In this context, Grand Hyatt Dubai installed an advanced reverse osmosis plant to use recycled water in its cooling towers. The hotel has also installed a water-efficient washing machine in its laundry area to effectively reduce overall water consumption, and has begun implementing a “Savings Programme,” where bed linens are changed every two days or after every third night of a guest’s stay in order to reduce energy use.
The Hyatt Regency Deira Hotel also took proactive measures to conserve energy by replacing traditional lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting in 80% of the hotel. The four Hyatt Place hotels in Dubai have embraced sustainability by installing solar panels, harnessing the sun's energy to operate water boilers during daylight hours, thus creating a source of green and renewable energy.
Reducing food waste
As part of its efforts to reduce the amount of food waste and waste in landfills, Hyatt hotels in Dubai have begun recycling items and encouraging their reuse whenever possible. Globally, Hyatt has set an ambitious goal of reducing food waste sent to landfill or burning by 50% per square meter by 2030, compared to levels recorded in 2019.
Hyatt hotels in Dubai have a comprehensive policy regarding food waste, educating their guests about this issue, working to prevent and reduce its occurrence, encouraging recycling, and teaching guests how to dispose of food. One notable example is the coffee capsule exchange program launched by the Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Hotel, whereby suppliers collect used coffee capsules for industrial analysis.
The Andaz Dubai, The Palm hotel launched a set of flavored oils and salts for the hotel, which it called “Taste of Andaz.” This collection is prepared from natural local ingredients and free of harmful chemicals. Furthermore, many Hyatt hotels use locally farmed seafood and local food products to support local businesses and reduce food miles.
