PRESSR: The Ministry of Education is introducing an artificial intelligence course for public school students starting in the 2025-2026 academic year.
Sarah Al Amiri: The introduction of an artificial intelligence curriculum in public schools represents a practical translation of the UAE government's proactive future vision.
United Arab Emirates: The Ministry of Education announced the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) as a curriculum within the public school system, from kindergarten to twelfth grade, starting from the next academic year 2025-2026. The objective is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the principles of AI and its applications in daily life, in line with the country's vision to empower students to interact with the changing times and create innovative solutions . The UAE is thus among the first countries in the world to include AI as a subject within school curricula, a step that consolidates its distinguished leadership in employing advanced technology to build human capital and enhance advanced skills from an early age. This step aligns with the country's strategic direction towards a knowledge-based economy and reflects its vision to empower future generations to lead the future.
Towards an innovative educational system that leads the future
This project is one of the most prominent national educational initiatives launched by the Ministry of Education in response to the UAE's efforts to strengthen its global position in the fields of artificial intelligence and digital transformation . The Ministry is working to promote the use of artificial intelligence in education through strategic partnerships with Presight, a subsidiary of Group 42, AI71 , the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, and the Emirates College for Advanced Education, with the aim of accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies within the educational environment.
The project, in essence, embodies the UAE's proactive vision of investing in human and knowledge-based energies. It reflects the country's commitment to building a modern and flexible educational system capable of preparing generations equipped with the tools and skills of the future, effectively contributing to advancing sustainable development at the national level.
A pioneering step that reflects the UAE's proactive vision to build a global digital society.
Her Excellency Sarah bint Youssef Al Amiri, Minister of Education, emphasized that adopting an artificial intelligence curriculum across all educational levels in public schools represents a strategic step that goes beyond teaching the use of artificial intelligence tools, but rather goes beyond that to preparing a generation aware of the ethics of technology and capable of developing smart solutions using national tools that contribute to opening up new educational and professional horizons for future generations.
Her Excellency added : “Incorporating an artificial intelligence curriculum into classrooms is a practical translation of the UAE government’s future vision, strengthening its position as a global leader in innovation- and advanced technology-based education. It also supports the UAE government’s efforts to build a knowledge-based society and a competitive digital economy, led by qualified national talent capable of addressing future challenges and creating new opportunities through active participation in leading the accelerating digital transformations worldwide.”
Comprehensive curriculum with international standards
The UAE's AI curriculum covers seven key areas recognized in AI, including basic concepts, data and algorithms, software use, ethical awareness, real-world applications, innovation and project design, as well as policy and community engagement. The curriculum also caters to different age groups and the skills and knowledge required at each academic level, according to the Ministry's design and the educational outcomes it has set for this newly developed subject. This ensures that all graduates of general education are familiar with the basic knowledge and concepts of AI, as well as the basic skills needed to use it, and the ability to employ it effectively in various contexts and areas of life .
Carefully designed educational stages for each age group
The curriculum includes educational units specifically designed for each age group. It begins in kindergarten with a series of visual and interactive activities, introducing children to the concepts of technology and artificial intelligence through stories and play . In the first cycle, students learn how machines work compared to humans, begin building digital thinking skills, and explore AI applications in their environment . In the second cycle, students transform into designers and evaluators, training and evaluating AI and machine learning systems, designing their own models, and learning about concepts such as bias and algorithms, as well as how to use AI safely and ethically. In the third cycle, the curriculum focuses on teaching students command engineering and simulating real-life scenarios to prepare them for higher education and the job market .
Smooth implementation without modifying study schedules
The Ministry of Education explained that the new AI curriculum will integrate seamlessly with existing curriculums, without requiring additional teaching hours. Classes for this curriculum will be allocated within the framework of the Computing, Creative Design, and Innovation subject, which will be taught by its teachers . The ministry will also provide educational guides that include a set of activities, models, and ready-made lesson plans that can be adapted to different classroom environments .
