Apogee Enterprises (NASDAQ:APOG) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
Apogee Enterprises, Inc. APOG | 41.06 | +0.17% |
Apogee Enterprises, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:APOG) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to $0.27 on 18th of February. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 2.9%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.
Apogee Enterprises' Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Apogee Enterprises' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 118.5%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 28% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Apogee Enterprises Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $0.44 in 2016 to the most recent total annual payment of $1.08. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 9.4% over that duration. Dividends have grown at a reasonable rate over this period, and without any major cuts in the payment over time, we think this is an attractive combination as it provides a nice boost to shareholder returns.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. Over the past five years, it looks as though Apogee Enterprises' EPS has declined at around 7.0% a year. If the company is making less over time, it naturally follows that it will also have to pay out less in dividends. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
Our Thoughts On Apogee Enterprises' Dividend
Overall, this is a reasonable dividend, and it being raised is an added bonus. The earnings coverage is acceptable for now, but with earnings on the decline we would definitely keep an eye on the payout ratio. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
