Apple's New Patent Filing Reveals All-Glass Design, Touchscreen 'Device' That Looks Like The Future Of MacBook

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is reportedly working on a groundbreaking all-glass MacBook Pro, with a touchscreen feature also under consideration, according to a new patent filing.
What Happened: On Thursday, a patent application, “Electronic Device,” was published. It suggested that Apple is exploring the possibility of creating a MacBook with a glass back, similar to the iPhone, reported AppleInsider. But it’s just a patent, so the company could use it even on the iPad or not use it at all.
The patent application, credited to four inventors, including Lauren M. Farrell, outlines the potential use of glass for the back of the MacBook Pro’s display, where the Apple logo is located.
It also reveals using glass sheets for the front and back surfaces of the display portion, with a metal housing component defining the peripheral side surfaces.

While the patent primarily focuses on an all-glass panel, Apple also mentioned the possibility of making only parts of the back surface glass. The report noted that this move could significantly enhance the device’s durability and overall usefulness.
Why It Matters: This development aligns with previous reports suggesting that Apple is considering a touchscreen MacBook Pro.
In January 2023, it was reported that Apple was exploring the addition of touchscreens to its MacBook computers, a move that was initially disapproved by the late co-founder Steve Jobs. This touchscreen feature could potentially be introduced in the MacBook Pro in 2025.
Furthermore, Apple’s focus on innovative display technologies is evident from its reported efforts to develop a foldable iPad or MacBook with a folding screen.
