The fact that multiple CBIZ, Inc. (NYSE:CBZ) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At CBIZ

The insider, Ware Grove, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$644k worth of shares at a price of US$79.11 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$75.20. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

In total, CBIZ insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

I will like CBIZ better if I see some big insider buys.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. CBIZ insiders own 3.2% of the company, currently worth about US$125m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At CBIZ Tell Us?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded CBIZ shares in the last quarter. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the CBIZ insiders selling. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. Be aware that CBIZ is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those makes us a bit uncomfortable...
