Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In Lazard
Lazard Ltd Class A LAZ | 50.91 | +0.35% |
We wouldn't blame Lazard, Inc. (NYSE:LAZ) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Evan Russo, the Chief Executive Officer of Lazard Asset Management LLC recently netted about US$4.2m selling shares at an average price of US$56.54. That sale reduced their total holding by 23% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.
Lazard Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Notably, that recent sale by Chief Executive Officer of Lazard Asset Management LLC Evan Russo was not the only time they sold Lazard shares this year. They previously made an even bigger sale of -US$6.7m worth of shares at a price of US$55.32 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at below the current price (US$55.59). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 41% of Evan Russo's stake.

Insider Ownership Of Lazard
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 1.9% of Lazard shares, worth about US$98m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
