HCI Group (NYSE:HCI) Has Announced A Dividend Of $0.40
HCI Group, Inc. HCI | 156.12 | +0.79% |
The board of HCI Group, Inc. (NYSE:HCI) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 20th of March, with investors receiving $0.40 per share. Including this payment, the dividend yield on the stock will be 1.0%, which is a modest boost for shareholders' returns.
HCI Group's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. However, HCI Group's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to fall by 8.1% over the next year. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, we estimate the payout ratio could be 12%, which is comfortable for the company to continue in the future.
HCI Group Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The annual payment during the last 10 years was $1.20 in 2016, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $1.60. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.9% a year over that time. While the consistency in the dividend payments is impressive, we think the relatively slow rate of growth is less attractive.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. It's encouraging to see that HCI Group has been growing its earnings per share at 30% a year over the past five years. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.
An additional note is that the company has been raising capital by issuing stock equal to 23% of shares outstanding in the last 12 months. Regularly doing this can be detrimental - it's hard to grow dividends per share when new shares are regularly being created.
We Really Like HCI Group's Dividend
Overall, we like to see the dividend staying consistent, and we think HCI Group might even raise payments in the future. The distributions are easily covered by earnings, and there is plenty of cash being generated as well. We should point out that the earnings are expected to fall over the next 12 months, which won't be a problem if this doesn't become a trend, but could cause some turbulence in the next year. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
