The fact that multiple CSW Industrials, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSWI) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

CSW Industrials Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Executive VP & Chief Strategy Officer, Donal Sullivan, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.8m worth of shares at a price of US$232 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$318, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 21% of Donal Sullivan's holding.

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company.
