Italian lawmakers have formally asked the government whether it spied on journalists, possibly using technology supplied by U.S.-based spyware maker Paragon, a source familiar with the matter said on Friday.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday said she had a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, during which they discussed the war in Ukraine and negotiations over a trade agreement between the United States and the European Union.

Italy, France and Germany are working on a joint letter to be made public by the end of the month, in which they ask the EU for plans to strengthen competitiveness, especially in the automotive sector, la Repubblica said on Saturday.

The Bank of Italy said on Friday it had selected the United States, Great Britain, Switzerland and Russia as countries outside the European Union its banks have significant exposure to, under rules designed to govern systemic risks.

Fitch Ratings said on Friday it had upgraded the bank's long-term issuer default rating to 'BBB-' from 'BB+' with a stable outlook.

S&P Global said on Friday that the merchant bank's creditworthiness could suffer if Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena's bid succeeds. S&P said it could lower its ratings on Mediobanca if it concludes that the potential consolidation would negatively impact the bank's creditworthiness.

UNICREDIT CRDI.MI, GENERALI GASI.MI

Italy's second-largest bank has begun divesting its 6.7% stake in the Italian leading insurer by selling just under 1.5%, la Repubblica reported on Saturday.

Shareholders in Banco BPM representing an overall stake of 0.12% had so far tendered their shares to UniCredit's bid, the Italian bourse said on Friday.

Shareholders in Banca Popolare Sondrio representing an overall stake of 20.74% had so far tendered their shares to BPER's bid, the Italian bourse said on Friday.

The board of Banca Popolare Sondrio will meet again on Tuesday to update its assessment of Bper's public exchange offer, in light of the one-euro-per-share increase put forward by the bank, daily Il Messaggero said on Sunday, citing news agency Ansa.

OVS OVS.MI

CEO Stefano Beraldo said that the group reserves the right to communicate any updates regarding the acquisition of the home goods brand Kasanova. After the purchase of Goldenpoint and the possible acquisition of Kasanova, OVS would be open to considering new opportunities, Beraldo added in an interview with daily la Repubblica on Sunday.
