U.S. COMPANY OUTLOOK RATIO LESS NEGATIVE THAN Q1 AND A YR AGO
Even with much tariff uncertainty still hanging over companies, the ratio of negative-to-positive outlooks (vs analyst expectations) for the second quarter from S&P 500 .SPX companies is below the year-ago level and well below the first-quarter 2025 level, according to the most recent LSEG data.
A total of 70 negative EPS preannouncements have been issued by S&P 500 companies for the second quarter, compared with 46 positive ones, resulting in a negative-to-positive ratio of 1.5 to 1, LSEG data shows.
That compares with a ratio of 1.8 to 1 for the second quarter of 2024, which had 67 negative outlooks to 37 positive ones; and with 2.5 to 1 for the first quarter of 2025, which had 79 negative outlooks to 32 positive ones.
In addition, it's below the long-term average since 1997 of 2.5 to 1, and the prior four-quarter average of 2.0 to 1, based on LSEG data.
The total number of outlooks remains similar to previous quarters as well, with 124 outlooks issued for the second quarter of 2025 versus 119 for the second quarter of 2024 and 121 for the first quarter of 2025.
