Some Masco Corporation (NYSE:MAS) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Independent Director, Mark Alexander, recently sold a substantial US$1.5m worth of stock at a price of US$74.03 per share. That diminished their holding by a very significant 53%, which arguably implies a strong desire to reallocate capital.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Masco

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the VP, General Counsel & Secretary, Kenneth Cole, sold US$1.5m worth of shares at a price of US$78.35 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$71.39. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

I will like Masco better if I see some big insider buys.

Does Masco Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Masco insiders own about US$58m worth of shares. That equates to 0.4% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Do The Masco Insider Transactions Indicate?

An insider sold Masco shares recently, but they didn't buy any. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying. Insider ownership isn't particularly high, so this analysis makes us cautious about the company. So we'd only buy after careful consideration. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. For example, Masco has 3 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
