NVIDIA's next-gen GeForce RTX 5090 & RTX 5080 "Blackwell" GPUs are rumored to launch in the fourth quarter of 2024.

NVIDIA's Next-Gen "Blackwell" Gaming GPUs, The GeForce RTX 5090 & RTX 5080, Are Rumored To Launch Later This Year

This year kicked off with the launch of the GeForce RTX 40 "SUPER" series which introduced three brand new GPUs based on NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace architecture. These GPUs were designed to offer better performance and value than their non-SUPER variants & were met with a positive reception overall.

Now it looks like NVIDIA is already planning to launch its next-generation gaming GPUs based on the recently introduced Blackwell architecture. The NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs announced so far are made entirely for the AI & HPC segment but we know for a fact that there's already a Blackwell GPU IP that will be powering the next generation of RTX graphics. These graphics cards are expected to utilize the RTX 50 series branding.

It is reported that NVIDIA will once again focus on launching its high-end graphics cards such as the GeForce RTX 5090 followed by the GeForce RTX 5080 in Q4 2024. The graphics cards will be beneficial for NVIDIA's board partners in expanding their shipments and the launch of these GPUs will also help push the average selling price of GPUs (ASPs) higher as more gamers upgrade toward the high end of the spectrum. MSI is among one of the major brands that is expecting double-digit gains with the GeForce RTX 50 GPUs and the respective AI PC platforms that are going to be a huge deal in 2024 and beyond.

Based on previous rumors, NVIDIA is expected to have two flagship dies under the GB202 and the GB203 banner. The former is likely going to be utilized by the GeForce RTX 5090 while the latter is expected to be utilized by the RTX 5080. The GB203 is rumored to be half of the GB202 GPU & both GPUs are expected to utilize the latest GDDR7 memory interface with up to 512-bit bus interfaces. Following is what the memory configurations on the various Blackwell GPU SKUs may look like:

  • GB202 - 512-bit / 28 Gbps / 32 GB (Max Memory) / 1792 GB/s (Max Bandwidth)
  • GB202 - 384-bit / 28 Gbps / 24 GB (Max Memory) / 1344 GB/s (Max Bandwidth)
  • GB203 - 256-bit / 28 Gbps / 16 GB (Max Memory) / 896.0 GB/s (Max Bandwidth)
  • GB205 - 192-bit / 28 Gbps / 12 GB (Max Memory) / 672.0 GB/s (Max Bandwidth)
  • GB206 - 128-bit / 28 Gbps / 8 GB (Max Memory) / 448.0 GB/s (Max Bandwidth)
  • GB207 - 128-bit / 28 Gbps / 8 GB (Max Memory) / 448.0 GB/s (Max Bandwidth)

The last two major launches, Ampere (GeForce RTX 3090) and Ada (GeForce RTX 4090) all occurred in late Q3 or early Q4. Based on that, the Q4 2024 release date for the next-gen flagships, GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 sounds plausible but one should remember that this isn't a definitive time frame that is set in stone and could change depending on the conditions of the market.
