Insiders were net buyers of Portillo's Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PTLO ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders bought more stock than they sold.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Portillo's Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent purchase by John Hartung is the biggest insider purchase of Portillo's shares that we've seen in the last year. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$12.32. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. John Hartung was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.

Does Portillo's Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Portillo's insiders own 2.4% of the company, worth about US$19m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
