We wouldn't blame Allient Inc. (NASDAQ:ALNT) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Ashish Bendre, the VP & Group President of Allied Orion Group recently netted about US$836k selling shares at an average price of US$52.25. That sale reduced their total holding by 40% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

Allient Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In fact, the recent sale by Ashish Bendre was the biggest sale of Allient shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$53.86). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 40% of Ashish Bendre's holding.

Does Allient Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Allient insiders own 13% of the company, worth about US$115m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Allient Insiders?

An insider hasn't bought Allient stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. But it is good to see that Allient is growing earnings. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
