Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.

So, the natural question for Energous (NASDAQ:WATT) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

How Long Is Energous' Cash Runway?

A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. As at September 2025, Energous had cash of US$13m and such minimal debt that we can ignore it for the purposes of this analysis. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$13m. So it had a cash runway of approximately 12 months from September 2025. That's not too bad, but it's fair to say the end of the cash runway is in sight, unless cash burn reduces drastically. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.

How Is Energous' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

Whilst it's great to see that Energous has already begun generating revenue from operations, last year it only produced US$3.0m, so we don't think it is generating significant revenue, at this point. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis we'll focus on how the cash burn is tracking. While it hardly paints a picture of imminent growth, the fact that it has reduced its cash burn by 31% over the last year suggests some degree of prudence. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

Can Energous Raise More Cash Easily?

Even though it has reduced its cash burn recently, shareholders should still consider how easy it would be for Energous to raise more cash in the future. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Since it has a market capitalisation of US$21m, Energous' US$13m in cash burn equates to about 61% of its market value. That's very high expenditure relative to the company's size, suggesting it is an extremely high risk stock.

Is Energous' Cash Burn A Worry?

On this analysis of Energous' cash burn, we think its cash burn reduction was reassuring, while its cash burn relative to its market cap has us a bit worried. Summing up, we think the Energous' cash burn is a risk, based on the factors we mentioned in this article. On another note, Energous has 5 warning signs (and 2 which make us uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
