In the last year, many Weatherford International plc (NASDAQ:WFRD) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Weatherford International Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Senior VP & Chief Accounting Officer, Desmond Mills, for US$895k worth of shares, at about US$68.03 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$74.80, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 42% of Desmond Mills's holding.

All up, insiders sold more shares in Weatherford International than they bought, over the last year. Insider Ownership Of Weatherford International

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Weatherford International insiders own 2.2% of the company, currently worth about US$116m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Do The Weatherford International Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Weatherford International shares in the last quarter. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of Weatherford International insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. Of course, the future is what matters most.
