After Leaping 27% ESCO Technologies Inc. (NYSE:ESE) Shares Are Not Flying Under The Radar
ESCO Technologies Inc. ESE | 276.56 | +1.39% |
The ESCO Technologies Inc. (NYSE:ESE) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 27%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 65% in the last year.
Since its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 19x, you may consider ESCO Technologies as a stock to avoid entirely with its 55.8x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, ESCO Technologies has been doing relatively well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.
Does Growth Match The High P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like ESCO Technologies' to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 13% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 46% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 29% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 16%, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we can see why ESCO Technologies is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
What We Can Learn From ESCO Technologies' P/E?
ESCO Technologies' P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of ESCO Technologies' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
Having said that, be aware ESCO Technologies is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
