While Groupon, Inc. (NASDAQ:GRPN) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 27% in the last quarter. In contrast, the return over three years has been impressive. The share price marched upwards over that time, and is now 147% higher than it was. To some, the recent share price pullback wouldn't be surprising after such a good run. If the business can perform well for years to come, then the recent drop could be an opportunity.

Although Groupon has shed US$73m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

Because Groupon made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Groupon actually saw its revenue drop by 8.9% per year over three years. So the share price gain of 35% per year is quite surprising. It's fair to say shareholders are definitely counting on a bright future.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Groupon has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 41% in the last twelve months. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 10% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance.
