TransMedics Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:TMDX) shareholders have seen the share price descend 17% over the month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been spectacular. In fact, during that period, the share price climbed 540%. Impressive! So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price. It really delights us to see such great share price performance for investors.

While the stock has fallen 9.8% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last half decade, TransMedics Group became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

It is of course excellent to see how TransMedics Group has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders.

A Different Perspective

Investors in TransMedics Group had a tough year, with a total loss of 22%, against a market gain of about 16%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 45% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand TransMedics Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance.
