Germany accuses two of plotting to assassinate Jewish leaders on behalf of Iran
FRANKFURT, May 21 (Reuters) - German prosecutors said they have filed criminal charges against a Danish citizen and an Afghan national suspected of helping plot the assassination of senior leaders of Jewish organizations in Germany on behalf of Iran.
The two men, identified only as Danish citizen Ali.S and Afghan citizen Tawab.M in accordance with German data protection laws, face charges including attempted murder.
The statement said that Ali.S is accused of working for the intelligence service of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and that he had close ties to the Quds Force unit of the Revolutionary Guard.
Prosecutors said that Ali.S was tasked in early 2025 with gathering information on Josef Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and Volker Beck, head of the German-Israeli Association.
They added that he also received instructions to spy on two Jewish grocery store owners in Berlin.
They stated, "The aim behind all of this was to facilitate the planning of murder and arson attacks in Germany."
Reuters has not yet been able to reach the suspects' lawyers.
German and Danish authorities said in July of last year that a Dane had been arrested in his country on suspicion of spying for Iran by gathering information about Jewish sites and individuals in Berlin.
