- OpenAI CEO Sam Altman apologized to Canadians in the Templer Ridge area for failing to report a blocked account linked to Jesse Van Rotselaar, who police say killed eight people at a school in February before taking her own life.

In a letter dated April 23, Altman said he "deeply regrets" not informing law enforcement about Van Rotselaar's account on the ChatGBT chatbot, which was blocked in June.

OpenAI previously stated that it banned Van Rotselaar's account last year for non-compliance with policies, but the violations did not meet the company's internal standards for reporting to law enforcement.

Altman said he spoke to Templer Ridge Mayor Darrell Krakowska and British Columbia Premier David Eby about the tragic incident, and described the pain felt by citizens as "unimaginable".

He added that the company is committed to working with government officials to help prevent a similar tragedy from happening again.
