The European Union imposes restrictions on Sudanese gold trade.

- The European Union said on Monday it had imposed new sanctions on Sudan targeting its gold trade, which it said was being used to finance the country's ongoing military conflict.

The Council of the European Union stated in a statement that "the decision imposes a ban on the purchase, import or transfer of gold of Sudanese origin. It also prohibits the sale, supply, transfer or export of mercury and cyanide to Sudan."

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces began more than three years ago and has caused a widespread humanitarian crisis.
