May 5 (Reuters) - Apple will allow users to choose from third-party artificial intelligence models to perform tasks such as creating and editing text and images, through features in iOS 27, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.
The change is scheduled to take effect this fall, according to the report, which cited informed sources.
In the new system, Apple refers to this capability as Extensions, which allows users to choose which AI services they wish to use to power Apple Intelligence features through the settings.
The report explained that Apple has so far conducted internal testing of integration with at least both Alphabet's Google and Anthropic.
Apple has not yet responded to Reuters' request for comment.
This development comes as Apple seeks to close the gap with rivals Alphabet and Microsoft, who have moved more quickly to roll out artificial intelligence features.
Google's Gemini system is expected to support Apple's revamped Siri system, which will be released this year.
Apple is holding its annual software developers conference in June, where it is expected to reveal more details about its plans in the field of artificial intelligence.
