PRESSR: Tabreed and Johnson Controls sign a strategic agreement to develop and provide advanced cooling technologies.

Advanced cooling technologies align with the region's climate neutrality strategy targets.

Abu Dhabi , United Arab Emirates: National Central Cooling Company PJSC (Tabreed - DFM: Tabreed ), a global leader in district cooling, and Johnson Controls, a global leader in smart, healthy, and sustainable buildings, today announced a joint agreement to accelerate the development and delivery of innovative and advanced cooling technologies, as part of a shared commitment to support global best practices in district cooling.

Tabreed is currently implementing a number of long-term projects, many of which fall within the scope of this agreement. The partnership focuses on achieving gains in energy efficiency, reliability, and total cost reduction, while supporting the region's climate-neutral strategies and environmental, social, and governance ( ESG ) framework priorities. The agreement also focuses on the supply of advanced, next-generation centrifugal chillers to enhance system efficiency and mitigate climate impact, leveraging performance analytics provided by Johnson Controls' platforms to immediately improve performance and enhance operational reliability.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony hosted at Tabreed's headquarters in Abu Dhabi, attended by Khaled Al Marzooqi, Tabreed's CEO, and Richard Lake, Vice President and President of Johnson Controls Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

Commenting on the signing of the agreement, Khalid Al Marzooqi, Tabreed’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Tabreed is entering a new phase of unprecedented growth, in line with our long-term strategy. We have several projects currently underway or planned for the near future, and this agreement supports both parties by ensuring the supply of essential equipment for large-scale infrastructure projects. By combining Tabreed’s operational excellence with Johnson Controls’ advanced chiller technologies, we will deliver tangible benefits to customers and communities alike, by achieving exceptional energy efficiency and enhancing the reliability of district cooling operations.”

Richard Lake, Vice President and President, Johnson Controls Europe, Middle East and Africa, added: “This partnership with Tabreed gives us an opportunity to demonstrate how reliable technologies and data-driven services can enhance performance in the district cooling industry on a large scale. Together, we will work to meet the growing demand for cooling in rapidly growing urban areas, while reducing energy consumption and emissions, contributing to a better quality of life .”

The partnership is based on two main pillars. The first relates to chillers that utilize advanced technologies. Johnson Controls will provide a wide range of large-capacity chillers equipped with variable-speed drives and modular systems for flexible loads. All are designed to reduce energy consumption and minimize maintenance requirements, while enhancing space utilization efficiency within Tabreed's district cooling plants.

Second, integrated lifecycle services, which include design and engineering support, commissioning and recommissioning, performance guarantees based on key indicators, as well as upgrades and refurbishments, and remote monitoring services via network operation centers, aim to extend the life of assets and reduce the total cost of ownership for equipment and chillers.

This framework agreement aligns with global sustainability goals by focusing on energy-efficient and low-emission technologies, adopting refrigerants with a lower environmental impact, and applying the principles of the circular economy and resource efficiency, linking plant-level improvements to broader carbon reduction policies.

According to the International Energy Agency ( IEA ), operational energy consumption in buildings worldwide accounts for approximately 30% of total final energy consumption. District cooling, which relies on the central production and distribution of refrigerant, is a more sustainable and efficient solution than traditional air conditioning systems. It significantly reduces energy consumption, lowers electricity demand during peak times, and minimizes the environmental impact of cooling operations.
