June 9 (Reuters Arabic Sports Service) - Jamie Chadwick knows where she wants to be and what she wants to do after becoming the first female driver to complete laps at the French circuit of La Sarthe, home of the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, in a hypercar.
Chadwick, a three-time winner of the now-defunct W Series women's racing championship, is serving as a backup driver for Hyundai's Magma Genesis team, which is making its debut in the Hypercar class, the highest category of cars in endurance racing.
The 28-year-old Briton told Reuters on Tuesday that driving on this track in a hypercar was "something any driver dreams of."
She added, "This has definitely made me more excited to join the hypercar category at some point and move from that role to a full-time racing driver role."
Chadwick needed to complete a few laps on Sunday to feel comfortable and familiar with the car in case she needed to step in as a last-minute replacement before next Saturday's race, which is the crown jewel of the World Endurance Championship.
Chadwick competed last year in the LMP2 category, which comes in second place, and after competing in single-seater car races in North America and speaking earlier in her career about competing in Formula 1, she sees her future as being in sports car racing.
"I definitely feel that this is where I want to find refuge, where I want to build my career," said the Briton, who also occasionally works as a Formula 1 analyst for Sky Sports television.
She added, "And this is through becoming a full-time hypercar driver."
Only two women are participating in this year's Le Mans race, both from France, compared to five women who participated in last year's edition.
French driver Doriane Bein, winner of last year’s F1 Women’s Academy Series, is competing in the LMP2 category in an Oreca representing Duquesne, while Lilo Fado is competing in the LMGT3 category in a Ferrari representing AF Corse.
She is the first woman to drive a Mercedes Formula 1 World Championship car, is on Peugeot's driver roster, and also hopes to eventually get a chance in the hypercar category.
"This year I will focus on developing the car, but I hope that in the near future I will have the opportunity to become a main driver in the top category of endurance racing," Bean recently said.
She added, "I want to compete with the best drivers in the world, and I hope that will be with them (Peugeot). I'm looking forward to competing in the World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the top category."
